Aims and Scope
The MESSENGER is an international peer-reviewed journal, focused on all aspects of messenger-signaling. Cells are surrounded by a plasma membrane, which isolates them from the environment and, in so doing, defines their existence. How cells can respond to a wide range of hormones, or first messengers, that cannot cross the plasma membrane had puzzled generations of scientists. During the 1950s, Earl W. Sutherland advanced the concept of second messenger to account for the intracellular responses to membrane impermeant hormones and the field of cellular signal transduction was born. The impact of the concept is pervasive and has led to a host of fundamental discoveries, including the protein kinase cascades that control essentially all aspects of cellular regulation. In 1971, Earl W. Sutherland received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his discoveries on the mechanisms of hormone epinephrine action and the second messenger cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP). Since then, only a limited number of other second messengers have been discovered, including cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), inositol trisphosphate (IP3), cyclic ADP-ribose (cADPR) and nicotinic acid adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NAADP). The last three second messengers signal via mobilization of intracellular stores instead of the protein phosphorylation. Together, these second messengers regulate the vast majority of cellular functions. The journal, MESSENGER, is devoted to all aspects of messenger-signaling, from the upstream activation of the receptors of the first messengers to the downstream signaling cascades. Undoubtedly, more novel second messengers will be discovered, expanding the scope of the journal appropriately. The MESSENGER publishes review articles, full research articles and short communications of important new scientific findings on all research aspects of messengers. Review articles should include comprehensive, critical and up-to-date information on a particular research topic related to messengers, with author's photo and short biography. The peer-reviewed proceedings of scientific meetings, symposia and workshops related to messengers are also published. Authors will receive the following benefits:
  • Electronic submission of articles
  • On-line refereeing of all articles submitted in electronic form
  • Fast reviews
  • Rapid times to publication
  • No page charges
  • Free color where justified
  • Distinguished editorial board
  • Free availability in online editions
